MHS marching band to visit Orlando

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The Marshalltown High School marching band will go on a trip to Orlando.

The Marshalltown High School marching band will leave on March 6 for Orlando, Fla., with 103 students, four directors and four parent chaperones piling into two buses for the more than 24-hour drive.

The band and color guard will attend workshops hosted by Disney, before visiting Disney World’s Epcot, Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, along with Universal Studios during the course of four days. They will also perform in a parade at Magic Kingdom, which they have been practicing for since January.

Brett Umthun, director and coordinator of instrumental music at MHS, said that this trip will give exposure to Marshalltown students through their parade performance, and the workshops will be beneficial.

“This is a very educational experience for them,” he said.

According to Umthun, the band workshop will be taught by a guest director, and students will sight read Disney music.

The marching band takes a trip every four years; The band has been fundraising and organizing for this trip for two years.

Money has been raised through a fruit sale, meat and cheese fundraiser, Scratch Cupcakes sale and most recently, a pasta dinner.

The last trip had students visiting Phoenix, Ariz. in 2016.

For those who would like to support the band, donations can be made to the band boosters.
