Investigation into Lewis death ongoing

Lewis

The investigation into the death of Johnqwez Deanthony Lewis continues.

Marshalltown Police Department Chief Mike Tupper said this has been one of the toughest cases he has been involved in.

“It is rare to have cases where we run into a lot of people who have information, but for reasons that can’t be explained, they do not cooperate,” he said. “It is disappointing and unusual.”

Lewis was 22 years old when he was shot and died on March 25 on Union Street. Another man — Devonte Allen Brookes, 27, also of Marshalltown — was also injured by gunshots.

The MPD and the Marshall County Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible for the crime.

Tupper said the reward is still available to whoever provides the information. He said some people have provided some leads but nothing that has led to an arrest.

“We are utilizing information to collect evidence to lead to an arrest and prosecution,” Tupper said. “I am very confident we are making good progress and that we will solve this case. It is still an active investigation, but it has been a challenge.”
