The Monday storm caused damage to the Iowa Valley Community College District campuses. Marshalltown Community College, Iowa Valley Grinnell and Iowa Valley Continuing Education campuses received the most damage. Despite sustaining damage, fall classes are scheduled to begin Aug. 24.

At MCC, there was significant damage to one of the roofs, which allowed water to infiltrate one of the main academic hallways. The campus is working to restore power and work on water remediation. The storm also affected several unoccupied housing units, and caused minor exterior damage to the residence halls.

Several spots on campus also sustained damage, including the baseball and softball complex.

The Orpheum and ETC Centers received minor damage.

“Despite the damage, we remain optimistic that we will begin fall classes on Aug. 24, as scheduled,” said Chancellor Kristie Fisher. “Our people are remarkable. Clean-up has already begun. The roofing company is beginning repairs immediately, and we anticipate work will be completed within the week. Kudos to the swift action of our physical plant team, and all of the faculty and staff that worked to minimize the water damage.”

Many of the networking systems for each campus are based out of the Marshalltown campus, so networking solutions – including systems used for communication – are offline until power is restored and systems are checked. Because of this, fall registrations are temporarily interrupted, but will resume when power is restored. Advising and registration hours will be extended as needed.

When able, the college will communicate via email and social media with incoming students and share updated plans for the start of the fall semester.
