Trump approves aid for Linn County, while other counties wait

President Donald Trump approved individual disaster assistance for Linn County on Thursday, allowing storm-stricken residents in that area of the state to apply for assistance with property damage, medical expenses and legal services.

“While many in the national media ignored what was happening here on the ground following the devastating derecho, President Trump and I spoke the day after the storm hit,” said Gov. Kim Reynolds in a news release. “During that conversation, he promised the full cooperation of the federal government during this critical time. Once again, he has come through and I am grateful for this president’s unwavering commitment to Iowa as we continue to secure federal assistance for all affected counties.”

Reynolds submitted a $4 billion federal request for disaster relief after a derecho swept across Iowa with little advance warning on Aug. 10. Winds of up to 100 mph destroyed at least one-third of the state’s corn crop, killed three Iowans and causing extensive damage to homes and businesses.

The request, which was submitted on Aug. 16, was partially approved by Trump the next day.

$3.8 billion of the request is dedicated to crop recovery as 13 million acres of crops suffered damage. The rest of the request included $100 million for private utilities, $82.7 million for damage to homes, and $45.3 million in public assistance.

The request for assistance for homes initially went unsigned. While homeowners’ insurance would typically help cover such damage, Cedar Rapids Mayor Brad Hart has said insured residents still face challenges. Many residents dealing with downed trees cannot collect insurance reimbursements unless the tree hits their home. Removing the downed trees can cost tens of thousands of dollars, Hart said.

Rep. Abby Finkenauer, D-Iowa, said Trump’s

approval doesn’t go far enough and called on Trump to approve individual assistance for Iowans in all of the 27 counties, such as Polk and Johnson, that Reynolds included in her request. She lso called on Trump to approve disaster aid for the Meskwaki Nation in Tama County.

“Today’s approval doesn’t go far enough, and we won’t stop working until FEMA gets it right,” Finkenauer said in a statement.

Republican Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst praised Trump’s action and said the president worked quickly to provide support for Iowa’s derecho victims.

“I’m grateful to both President Trump and Governor Reynolds for acting quickly to get Iowans in the community assistance, and I’ll continue working to ensure folks across the state who have been affected by the derecho are getting the support they need,” Ernst said in a news release.

More counties may be approved for assistance as FEMA continues to assess the damage, according to the governor’s office.
