Iowa tops 5,000 daily confirmed virus cases

Iowa surpassed 5,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases for the first time in a single day Friday as a surge in infections is sending more people to hospitals and pushing more schools to send student home for online classes.

The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 5,065 new confirmed cases in the past 24 hours. There were 19 additional deaths, raising the total to 1,947.

Over the past two weeks, the rolling average number of daily new cases in Iowa has increased by 2,813, an increase of nearly 176 percent, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University.

One in every 102 people in Iowa tested positive in the past week.

State data shows hospitalizations continued to climb, reaching 1,227 with 240 people in intensive care and 213 more COVID-19 patients admitted in the past 24 hours.

Hospitals in the Des Moines area released a statement through the Polk County Health Department on Wednesday that said the state is at a critical point with surging coronavirus cases.

“We continue to work closely together to do the best we can care to for patients. But right now, we are facing bed shortages and staffing shortages,” the statement said.

The state Department of Education has granted waivers to more than 40 districts to allow online-only instruction in individual schools or full districts.

All but five of Iowa’s 99 counties now have a positivity rate above 15 percent, indicating the virus continues to rapidly spread statewide.

The seven-day rolling average of the positivity rate in Iowa was 51.4 percent on Nov. 12, second in the nation behind South Dakota.
