Voters animated with write-ins
Ponies and Disney characters make push in polls

While the Presidential election yielded tension among Americans, the magic of friendship shone through further down the ballot in Marshall County.
At least one voter was a nay-sayer when considering their options for the county ag extension council. They opted to trot out some new options to serve the agriculture community, voting for “My Little Pony” characters Rainbow Dash and Flutter Shy. The letter “X” also received a vote, though it is unclear if this refers to rapper DMX, an X-Men villain created by Thanos named X, or literally the letter “X.”
The stable of ponies earning votes also included Pinkie Pie for soil and water conservationist. Pinkie Pie tied with Hello Kitty.
When his term concludes in January, President Donald Trump may find support as a conservationist in Marshall County. He earned one vote.
Speaking of the Presidential election, the odd couple pairing of Sesame Street’s Big Bird and professional gamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins for President and Vice President did not count up enough votes to rival Trump or President-elect Joe Biden and his running mate, Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris. Trump’s running mate Vice President Mike Pence received four votes for President without a running mate listed.
A pair of the National Football League’s top quarterbacks — Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees — will continue to lead their respective teams rather than leading the country. Voters were not quite ready to start Christmas in early November — thankfully — and only cast one vote for Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Jesus has at least one follower in the county and earned their vote for President. Satan got a vote for State Senate District 36, a seat that was won again by Jeff Edler (R-State Center).
There will not be a new sheriff in town but some famous law keepers and investigators got a nod from voters. Deputy Barney Fife will keep his post in Mayberry rather than rank up in Marshall County. A second vote was cast for a Barney, but that could be the purple dinosaur that teaches children about love and friendship. Also receiving votes were Sherlock Holmes, Minnie Mouse, Scooby Doo and former president Barack Obama.
Scooby Doo was not the only dog left without a bone on Election Day. Snoopy fell short in the race for Liscomb Township Trustee.
Auditor/Recorder Nan Benson had a bevy of opposition coming from write-in candidates. She said it is common to see some odd submissions but a couple were a shot across the bow.
“I know somebody did write in against me for somebody nicer,” she said. “I got an ‘anybody else.'”
Kanye West was on the ballot for president in Iowa but failed to gain traction. He also received a write-in vote for Auditor/Recorder. Donald and Daffy Duck each earned a vote as did the House of Mouse mascot Mickey Mouse. Silent comedian/illusionist Raymond Teller of the duo Penn and Teller conjured up one vote. M. Bison, the final boss from the video game series Street Fighter, was crushed in the race. Communism was written in by one voter.
Benson and the Marshall County Board of Supervisors canvassed Marshall County’s votes on Tuesday, making them official. There were no changes in the unofficial results reported on Nov. 3 when polls closed.
“Occasionally you find a typo where somebody’s name is typed incorrectly,” Benson said. “I’ve never seen incorrect counts.”
