Food drive set for June 19

The second annual Marshalltown Rotary Club Food Drive will be held June 19.

The second annual Marshalltown Rotary Club Food Drive will return on June 19.

Organizer Jim Goodman said Rotary is a service club, and the drive serves as a way for members to serve the community of Marshalltown.

“It helps give Rotary better visibility in the community and the need for food has grown with all of the events Marshalltown has been through the past few years,” he said. “There are more people in need of assistance.”

Goodman said Rotary will collect non-perishable goods at the drive, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the south parking lot of the Fisher Community Center.

He said there will be options for donations. People can pack up any non-perishable foods, such as canned vegetables and soups or pastas, and deliver it to the food drive location. Or they can go to Hy-Vee or Fareway and buy pre-assembled sacks for either $15 or $25 each. Those sacks can be delivered to the drive right away or Rotary members can pick them up afterward. The third option is for people to provide a cash donation on site.

Last year, Goodman said they collected $4,000 worth of food and about $2,000 in cash. He hopes to exceed that amount this year.

“I think it is absolutely possible,” Goodman said. “I think people are more in tune in to this type of thing than they were a year ago. I think this drive is something the Rotary will be able to continue.”
