Man arrested on animal abuse charges

Purdy

A local man has been arrested on allegations that he knowingly and unlawfully caused animal mistreatment resulting in the death of a cat and a dog and serious injuries to two other dogs at a residence in Albion.

Cole Blake Purdy, 21, of rural Marshalltown, was arrested Wednesday in Le Grand and charged with three counts of aggravated misdemeanor animal abuse and one serious misdemeanor count of the same offense related to incidents that allegedly occurred between November 2021 and April 2022. According to a police report, his mistreatment of a cat, which suffered from chemical burns, resulted in its death late in January, and his abuse of a dog ultimately led to a head injury that ended in the animal being euthanized on Dec. 31, 2021.

The complaint alleges he also caused another dog to break its pelvic bone and suffer from a head laceration and caused a third dog to suffer lung damage. After one of the incidents on April 22, a woman Purdy was living with asked him to leave the residence, and he did.

Purdy, who has previous domestic abuse assault and criminal mischief felony convictions, was taken to the Marshall County Jail and held on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. A preliminary hearing has been set for May 27.
