A long-time local and statewide leader was honored with the highest recognition award given out by the Marshalltown Rotary Club at its annual Christmas Party held the evening of Dec. 13 at Elmwood Country Club.

Larry McKibben, a member of Rotary since 1982, was the recipient of the Kenneth Brintnall Award. The club recognizes a member each year who has displayed a lifetime of service achievement exemplifying the Rotary motto of Service Above Self. A committee of former recipients selects a recipient annually.

McKibben grew up on a farm just outside of Marshalltown and graduated from Marshalltown High School. From there he attended Marshalltown Community College and then transferred and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. He then spent two quarters at Iowa State as a graduate assistant in political science before going to the Army where he was honorably discharged due to a hip injury. After being released from the Army, McKibben went to the University of Iowa where he received his JD degree.

Having attended all three state universities as well as MCC continues to be a source of pride for him.

After completing his education, he returned to Marshalltown to work, raise a family and give back to the community.

In addition to having had an extremely active and lengthy professional career, McKibben has been a local, as well as statewide, leader who has placed his community and state first in all his decisions that have had long-term benefits for many.

He was a coach for his children’s sports in softball, baseball and football, a member of the Marshalltown Little League Board of Directors and umpired youth sports for several years. He is a diehard Hawkeye fan and founded the Marshalltown I-Club in 1973.

McKibben was elected to the Marshalltown School Board and served on that board from 1985-1989 as a director and from 1989-1991 as president of the board.

He has been a member of the Marshalltown Rotary Club since 1982 and is a past president. He and his family also hosted three Rotary exchange students over the years.

In other areas of service above self, McKibben served on the original MEDIC board to help stimulate economic development, he is a long-time Farm Bureau member, past president of the Farmers Savings Bank Board of Directors and past treasurer of the Marshalltown School District Foundation.

The award winner also traveled to Russia in 1991 with a 10-member team of agriculture law experts to attend an ag law conference in Moscow.

In 1997, McKibben was elected to the Iowa Senate where he served as State Senator from 1997-2008. He chaired the powerful Senate Ways and Means committee and served as President Pro Tem.

In 2013, he was appointed to the Iowa Board of Regents where he has served in a variety of capacities.

McKibben retired this year having been a partner with Moore, McKibben, Goodman & Lorenz, LLP since graduating from law school in 1972.

McKibben’s family includes his wife Marki, his daughter Katie, who lives in Coralville and a son Mark who lives in Marshalltown and is married to his wife Laura. Mark and Laura have two sons, Brant and Luke.

Kenneth Brintnall Memorial Award winners

The Kenneth Brintnall Award was started in 1975-76 by Dave Norris who was club president at the time. The program was an outgrowth of the VROOM Award started when George Hinshaw was president in 1969-70. The designee for the award was initially determined by a Rotary committee. Today the person is selected by a committee made up of the former winners. The Kenneth Brintnall Award is the highest award bestowed on any member by the club. The award is granted to a Rotarian for lifetime service achievement in the Rotary tradition of Service Above Self.
