Flooding at Honey Creek

T-R PHOTO BY GARRY BRANDENBURG

Honey Creek, a tributary to the Iowa River, gathers water from land areas in northwest Marshall County and southeast Hardin County. The watershed area above this bridge has 95.6 square miles. After the rainfall event during the evening of Feb. 26 and the early morning hours of the 27th, runoff from the landscape gathered forces and overfilled the banks of Honey Creek, spilling excess water into the floodplain of this stream. Eventually water from this stream and all other tributaries above Marshalltown will cause the river gauge station at Highway 14 to respond. At noon on the 27th, the Marshalltown gauge was 14.49 feet and had a projected crest of about 15 feet at 8 a.m. Feb. 28th. Overnight rainfall in Albion was 0.92 inches.
