Junk pickup fundraiser registration ends Friday

A Saturday activity has a dual purpose — clean up the community and raise money for the annual Marshalltown fireworks display.

Jake Rowley, owner of Junk Relief, is offering curbside junk removal services on Saturday for $75. Residents can register for Pickup for Pyros through Friday evening.

“Just register with your name, address and your email, which is where you will get your invoice,” he said. “As long as they’re registered by April 19, they’re fine.”

There is no limit to the amount of junk a household can have on the curb. However, Rowley said they will not pick up appliances, tires or chemicals, such as paint or cleaning products. Junk pickup will begin Saturday morning. He asked for all junk to be on the curb by 8 a.m.

“There is no way to identify the time the junk will be picked up,” Rowley said. “Pickups will happen in the most efficient order possible.”

Every cent, he said, will go toward purchasing fireworks. The disposal cost will be split between Junk Relief and Exterior Home Remodeling.

“I want to make it clear every dime goes to fireworks,” Rowley said. “If someone wants to pay extra, that will go to the fireworks.”

Rowley hopes to attract more addresses during the rest of the week. His goal is to raise $5,000 for the fireworks, and so far 18 addresses have signed up.

“I hope to get at least another 15 to 20 registrations,” Rowley said. “There is no limit on how many we can do. I know I want this to be an overwhelmingly busy day, just so the donation can be bigger.”

He pointed out that it is a good opportunity for property owners who have received nuisance warnings from the city. They will be able to dispose of the items causing the nuisance at a cheaper rate.

“Some people can take advantage of that,” Rowley said. “Otherwise, a contractor cleaning up a nuisance property can cost thousands of dollars. Then, you have no choice but to pay at that point.”

He plans to give the donation next week after everything has been added up. Additional sponsors for the pickup are Midnight Garden and United Cajun Navy.
