MHS students shelter in place after social media threat

Students and staff at Marshalltown High School (MHS) sheltered in place on Thursday morning while local law enforcement investigated a social media threat, according to a statement on behalf of school district leadership.

At approximately 8:52 a.m, the district was notified of “a threatening social media post towards Marshalltown High School.”

“In collaboration with local law enforcement, a decision was made to use our shelter in place protocol to ensure the safety of students and staff while police investigated,” the statement said. “At approximately 9:55 a.m., law enforcement informed us shelter in place procedures could be lifted. Law enforcement has taken the situation into their own hands and are continuing their investigation.”

The statement adds that although there was no indication of an imminent threat, the decision to shelter in place was made out of an abundance of caution for the safety of students and staff.

“Marshalltown Community School District extends our sincere appreciation for the trust and patience shown by everyone involved. The safety of our students remains our top priority, and everyone in our schools prioritizes vigilance in ensuring their well-being,” it concludes.

Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper said he did not have any further information to share at the present time.
