GRUNDY CENTER — Earlier this week, a Wellsburg man was sentenced for the lesser charge of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor, after originally being charged with third degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony.
According to court records, 30-year-old Trent James Wood was arrested in 2023 after a female victim alleged that in the early hours of Oct. 17, 2021, he had performed sex acts without her consent at his residence in Wellsburg after buying her alcohol. On Jan. 29, Wood pled guilty to the aforementioned lesser charge, and on Monday, he received a two-year suspended prison sentence with credit for time served and an $855 fine with a 15 percent surcharge added. He will also be placed on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry.
