Annual Draws For Paws bar crawl fundraiser is Aug. 2

Most bar crawls don’t raise funds for animals in need, but the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown’s Draws for Paws fundraiser does. It returns for the fifth year Saturday, August 2 from noon to 6 p.m.

The following businesses will be stops on the crawl:

• El Portal

• Legends American Grill

• Lucy’s Dive Bar

• Old Timer Tavern

• Tannin Wine Bar

• The 918

• The Flying Elbow

• Vaughn’s Pub

• Wayward Social

Participants may visit the locales at any time and in any order. People will get a punch card to track visits to each stop. Once completed, cards can be turned in at the Old Timer for a chance to win a prize (you do not need to be present to win). There will be live music by Trevor Parrish at the Old Timer at 6 p.m.

“It’s the same businesses that continuously have our back year after year,” said Peggy Hannam, who co-chairs the event with Susan Krough. “I just want to make sure that everybody understands how much we appreciate them, because without them, we can’t do this.”

She noted that last year’s event featured a silent auction at the end.

“But this year, we’ve decided to do a silent auction basket at each participating location, and then they will be able to bid on these through an app on their phones,” she explained. “It’s kind of like we did at Furr Ball the last two years, where we have a silent auction, but you don’t actually run over there and sign your name — you do it all from your phone. It will let you know when you’ve been outbid and you can watch your bids as you travel around to each participating location.”

For instance, there will be a murder mystery dinner as part of the auction, available to view details on at Lucy’s Dive Bar. The auction will run through QGIV and users will receive instructions. Silent auction items will be posted the day of the event.

Event registration is $60 and includes a Royal Blue event T-shirt. For $75, participants become an Ultimate Giver and receive a limited-edition Sea Green shirt. Punch cards and shirts can be picked up at Legends the Friday before from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., or the day of from 10 a.m. to noon before the crawl.

“This year we’ve added a couple of entertainment acts that will be in a couple of the bars,” Krough said. “That is new.”

In 2024, there were more than 200 participants that helped raise $13,000 for the Marshalltown ARL, whose operating costs exceed $600,000 a year. The goal this year is to bring in $15,000.

A current need at the ARL is new cat cages.

“They definitely want to upgrade equipment,” Hannam said. “Medical expenses are at an all time high, food expenses.”

Krough echoed that sentiment, adding that animal shelters all over the United States are hurting.

“Our need in Marshalltown is huge, but we’re not the only ones,” she said.

The Marshalltown ARL has to raise 100 percent of its funds, and volunteers and donors keep the doors open.

“We both have full-time jobs. We would not be doing this if we did not believe in the culture that the Animal Rescue League is creating in our community, and that is because of the executive director Austin (Gillis),” Krough said.

“This is fun. It’s laid back and everybody has a good time. We always like to say drink responsibly,” Hannam said.

Starting at $4.38/week.
