Almost a year after the death of a local motorcyclist in a three-vehicle crash on Highland Acres Road, a Haverhill woman has been issued a citation for unsafe passing in connection with the incident.

Reahna Kaye Sawyer, 23, made an appearance in Marshall County District Court on Tuesday after the Iowa State Patrol (ISP) issued the citation — dated July 7 — in connection with the death of Douglas Hanken, 70, who was riding his motorcycle near the 238th Street intersection on July 19, 2024 when Sawyer attempted to pass, struck Hanken and pushed him and his motorcycle into the oncoming lane, where he hit a 15-year-old driver, according to an ISP crash report.

Hanken died the following day at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
