An as yet unidentified male was pronounced dead on Saturday after officers from the Tama and Toledo police departments and the Tama County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check request for a suicidal subject who was alleged to have possessed a firearm in Tama.

According to a press release from the Tama Police Department, the first call for service came in at 1:01 a.m. Saturday, and a secondary reporter told dispatchers the male was armed and also requested a welfare check. At 1:38 a.m., officers located him in the 800 block of West 13th Street in Tama, and an officer, who has not yet been identified, shot the subject. After the shooting, first aid was administered at the scene until Tama EMS arrived, and the man was transported to the UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the man killed will not be released at present pending family notification, and the identity of the officer, who has been placed on critical incident leave per department policy, is also not being released at this time.

“(The) Iowa Department (of) Criminal Investigations was on scene and has been requested to assist with the investigation. The Iowa Attorney General and the Tama County Attorney’s Office will review the case. There will be no further information released at this time,” the release reads.

The Tama PD, Toledo PD and Tama County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by Tama County Communications, the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DCI, the Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
