Riverside Cemetery mourns loss of beloved goose Blossom
T-R FILE PHOTO — Newfound lovers Frankie, left, and Blossom, right, enjoyed a fun-filled frolic around Lake Woodmere in February of 2023 after meeting and going for a swim that morning. Blossom passed away on Sunday after being struck by a vehicle, according to a press release from Riverside Cemetery.
Riverside Cemetery staff and community members are grieving the loss of Blossom, a beloved resident goose who was tragically struck by a vehicle near the Kirby Mausoleum on Sunday evening.
Surveillance footage shows the incident occurred around 5 p.m. The driver exited the vehicle, approached Blossom, and left her near Lake Woodmere. No message or contact has been made with the cemetery office.
“Accidents happen, and we understand that,” said a spokesperson for Riverside Cemetery. “But the absence of any outreach has added to our heartbreak. Blossom was more than a familiar face — she was a symbol of Riverside’s spirit and a nationally recognized presence.”
Blossom had gained attention far beyond Marshalltown through social media and community storytelling, becoming a gentle ambassador for the cemetery and its mission of remembrance and care.
The Riverside staff invites the public to share photos, stories, and memories of Blossom on the cemetery’s Facebook page or in person at the office.
“Blossom was truly loved,” the spokesperson added. “Her absence is deeply felt, and we’re grateful to those who join us in honoring her legacy.”
