Polls open in 2025 city/school election
The polls are officially open in the 2025 city/school elections both in Marshalltown and around Marshall County from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with several key races on the ballot and two major bond issues being decided at the East and West Marshall school districts.
According to Marshall County Auditor/Recorder Nan Benson, about 1,200 people had already voted early as of 12 p.m. on Monday. In Marshalltown, current city councilors Mike Ladehoff and Gary Thompson are running to replace outgoing Mayor Joel Greer, and a total of four candidates — Tim Bradbury, Sue Cahill, Scott McLain and incumbent Jeff Schneider — are in the running for two at-large city council seats. In Ward 1, Marco Yepez-Gomez is running unopposed for the seat Ladehoff currently holds, and in Ward 3, incumbent Greg Nichols is seeking his first full term unopposed after winning a special election in 2023 to replace Dex Walker.
Four candidates — incumbents Karina Hernandez, Leah Stanley and Zach Wahl, along with newcomer Eric Goslinga — are running for three seats on the Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD) Board of Education. Elsewhere in Marshall County, voters will decide the fate of a $19.8 million bond issue in the East Marshall district to improve the buildings in Laurel, Le Grand and Gilman, and district leaders have indicated that the Gilman building, which currently houses grades 6-8, will no longer be utilized as an attendance center after the 2026-2027 school year regardless of the outcome. Last year’s $13.5 million East Marshall bond fell short of the needed 60 percent supermajority with 53.5 percent support.
At West Marshall, voters will consider the same $14 million bond issue that fell short of a supermajority with 56 percent support last year to finance the construction and furnishing of a new two-story K-5 building at the elementary that replaces the three-story building currently housing grades 4-5 and an addition connecting the middle and high school buildings with a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) space for students. It also includes a new drop off and parking area at the elementary school.
