Thanksgiving Day family disturbance ends in tragic death of Marshalltown man

On Thursday at 12:31 p.m., Marshall County deputies were dispatched to the 3300-Mile of 130th Street for a report of a disturbance with a family member that displayed a handgun. Before deputies arrived, the family member left the property in a vehicle and was believed to be traveling to Marshalltown.

At approximately 1:04 p.m., the family member’s vehicle was observed entering the Iowa Veterans Home property at 1301 Summit St. IVH security was notified for safety protocol as Marshalltown Police Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

The family member was identified as Jorell Handorf, 23, of Marshalltown. After multiple attempts to establish communications with Handorf, it was determined that he had tragically died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mr. Handorf was not an IVH resident or employee, and the incident remains under investigation.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Marshalltown Police Department, Marshalltown SWAT, State Center Police Department, Unity Point Health Ambulance Service, Marshalltown Fire Department, and the Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office.
