The historic and distinctive Flamingo Motel structure located at 705 Iowa Ave. W., was in the process of being demolished on Tuesday. The property was purchased by Wahl and Associates LLC from Santillan Holdings LLC on Dec. 10, according to the Marshall County Beacon website, after Santillan Holdings purchased it from Shaktima LLC in December of 2024. Wahl and Associates Owner Zach Wahl said they are keeping their options open for future commercial developments at the site along the old Highway 30. The main goal, he added, is to remove an eyesore property from the community, and the vintage sign and the giant pink flamingo itself will be preserved. T-R archives indicate that the motel first opened in 1957 under the ownership of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ricks and changed hands a few times before becoming part of a corporate chain in the late 1970s.
