Area deputies respond to several weather-related crashes over weekend

AREA — First responders in Marshall and Tama counties stayed busy over the weekend after another wave of winter weather struck the area on Saturday morning and continued well into the afternoon.
Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips said his agency responded to four vehicles going into medians and ditches and one accident with reportable damage due to weather and road conditions as the wind and snow squalls reduced visibility in many areas.
Conversely, Tama County Sheriff Casey Schmidt noted that his office responded to several accidents Saturday, and he shared a photo on the department’s Facebook page showing multiple vehicles in the ditch along Highway 30 near Tama and Toledo.
“The most significant issue occurred near the 201-mile marker on Highway 30, where icy conditions led to multiple traffic accidents. At the same time, we also managed a vehicle fire near V18 and Highway E66. The ice on the roads was very deceptive, which is why we ask everyone to slow down, even when there is only a little snow falling,” Schmidt said.
