Citizen alerts authorities to wanted man at hotel leading to arrest

PHOTOS BY MICHAEL D. DAVIS — Numerous law enforcement agencies including the Toledo Police Department, Tama Police Department, Tama County Sheriff’s Office, Mid-Iowa Drug Task Force, Meskwaki Nation Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol came together to assist in the arrest of 45-year-old Joshua Gustafson at the Designer Inn and Suites in Toledo last Sunday.

Ten agencies banded together on Sunday to safely take into custody 45-year-old Joshua Gustafson, who was staying at the Designer Inn and Suites in Toledo. Gustafson, of Pleasant Hill, had active felony arrest warrants with nationwide extradition following an assault and robbery in October. During the crime, Gustafson allegedly pepper-sprayed, punched, and kicked his victim multiple times, causing a chipped tooth, and stole multiple of the victims’ personal items and their car.

After being wanted for months, it took a local citizen doing their civic duty to apprehend Gustafson. Staying at Toledo’s Designer Inn and Suites, Gustafson was reluctant to provide a copy of his photo identification. However, after seeing Gustafson’s name on the caller ID, a staff member looked up his name online and saw the news article related to Gustafson’s outstanding warrants. The Toledo Police Department was subsequently notified.

Officers investigated and believed Gustafson was in his room with an unknown female. The officers had an unsuccessful attempt to make contact, but were able to figure out the hotel room was occupied. Toledo Police then secured a warrant to search the room. In an effort to make sure everyone remained safe, resources were requested, and the hotel was evacuated.

Officers found Gustafson unresponsive in the room and believed the cause to be an intentional overdose. Officers gave Gustafson Narcan, which saved his life. He was then taken into custody without incident.

In his press release, Toledo Police Chief Dan Quigley thanked the agencies that helped resolve the incident, listing the Tama Police Department, Tama County Sheriff’s Office, Mid-Iowa Drug Task Force, Meskwaki Nation Police Department, Tama County 911 Communications Center, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa State Patrol Crisis Negotiation Team, Iowa State Patrol Tactical Team (Area’s “A” and “D”) and Toledo Emergency Medical Services.

Starting at $4.38/week.
