Thieves burglarize Hellberg’s Jewelers on April 4; investigation continues
T-R PHOTO BY ROBERT MAHARRY — Several display cases at Hellberg’s Jewelers were smashed and destroyed when two burglars broke into the building just after 4 a.m. on Saturday, April 4. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
A pair of thieves used a brick to break into Hellberg’s Jewelers on West Main Street in the early hours of Saturday, April 4. They have not yet been apprehended, and the investigation into the incident continues.
Hellberg’s Jewelers Owner Vic Hellberg showed the T-R surveillance camera video of a man “casing” the rear entry of the store on March 26, and Flock camera footage indicated that he was also in town on April 1. On the morning of the robbery, two men arrived in a white pickup truck with Kansas plates, broke into the store just after 4 a.m. and subsequently smashed several display cases and the window at the west entrance to the store before gathering the items they stole in bags and quickly leaving the scene ahead of the arrival of officers from the Marshalltown Police Department (MPD).
It has been determined that the truck, which has Kansas plates, was registered to a recently deceased individual and had not been reported stolen. Hellberg did not have an estimate on the value of the items stolen.
The MPD issued a press release about the incident on Monday afternoon, reporting that officers arrived at approximately 4:08 a.m., two minutes after they were dispatched to an alarm call.
“Detectives and Crime Scene personnel were called in to investigate and process the scene. It is unknown at this time what all was stolen from the business. Marshalltown investigators are working on developing suspects and processing evidence related to the burglary,” the release said.
