Glen Eugene Spence, 81

Glen Eugene Spence, 81, of Marshalltown, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.

Funeral services for Glen will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will start one hour prior at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be directed to either the Iowa River Hospice Home or to a charity of your choice. Glen Spence was born on November 27, 1936, in Laurel to Lloyd and Ruby Halverson Spence. He graduated from Laurel High School in 1954. On October 7, 1957, Glen was united in marriage to Betty Jean Barnes in Gilman. Betty passed away on June 19, 1998. He later married Rosalie Kamper Rutherford in 2000 in Weslaco, Texas. Glen had been the Executive Vice President for Commercial Bank (name was changed later to Hawkeye Bank then Mercantile), for 35 years and retired in 1995 on his birthday. He was a past member of the Elks Lodge as well as Elmwood Country Club. He enjoyed antique tractors and would go on the WHO and WMT tractor rides. He was also an avid fan of all sports; watching any and all events on TV, especially Hawkeye and Cyclone Football and Basketball and the Minnesota Vikings. Glen also enjoyed spending his winters in Texas as well as trading in his cars every two years for new ones. Last but not least, Glen enjoyed his weekly visits to the casino!

Glen is survived by his spouse of 18 years, Rosie. Children: Tom (Debbie) Spence, of Marshalltown, Jim (Deborah) Spence, of Geneseo, Illinois and Jeff Spence, of Australia. Step Grandchildren: Justin (Nicole) Van Opdorp, Nathan Van Opdorp and Cassie (Jacob) Van Herzeele. He is also survived by his step great grandchildren; Breyton, Caidyn, Brooklynn, Michael and Clara Belle as well as siblings; Ed (Sandy) Spence, Linda Sharer and numerous other family and friends.

Glen is preceded in death by his first wife, Betty; his parents, Lloyd and Ruby and sister Helen Louise Ferguson.
