John Frederick Finical III, 73
John Frederick Finical III, 73, of Tama, Iowa, gave his life for his country when he passed away Thursday, December 12, 2019 at the Iowa Veteran’s Home as the result of exposure to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam.
Services for John will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at the Iowa Veteran’s Home chapel with Reverend Tom Bower officiating. A visitation for John’s family and friends will occur on Monday, December 16, 2019 from 4:00-6:30 at the Iowa Veteran’s Home chapel. John F. Finical III was born in Oelwein, Iowa to parents John F. Finical II and Bernadine (Blake). He attended school in Cedar Falls and graduated Class of 1964. Upon graduation John enlisted in the Armed Forces and served from 1964-1967 in the United States Marines. While active, he served his country in the Vietnam conflict.
In July of 1978 he was united in marriage to his wife Karen (Post) in Gilmore City, Iowa. The two resided and raised their family in Tama, Iowa and John worked as a machinist for Deere and Company in Waterloo, Iowa. In his free time, John was a humanitarian and volunteered his spare time to Habitat for Humanity. He also sang for residents of care centers. He was a member of the Men’s Interfaith Chorus. His true passion was organizing and hosting “The Old Time Gospel Show.” For several years John, Karen, and the family were big travelers. One major accomplishment was that they were able to visit 49 out of the 50 states.
In 2013, John became a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA. John enjoyed living at IVH where he was loved by the staff and developed many friendships. The family wishes to offer sincere gratitude to all who made the last years of John’s life so happy and memorable.
Left to honor and cherish his memory is his wife Karen of 41 years; his children, Matthew J. (Cassie) Finical of Milton, WI, Amanda S. (Ryan) Roach of Janesville, IA, John F. Finical IV, of Omaha, NE, and Michelle L. (Tyler) Krout of Dubuque, IA; his 11 grandchildren, Cody, Zach, Madison, Lindsay, Sarah, Katie, Emily, Noah, Ella, John F. Finical V, and Thomas; three great- grandchildren, Sawyer, August, and Indie; two brothers Don (Ann) Finical, Steven (Konni) Finical and one sister Susan (Mark) Reis; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
