David was born May 3rd, 1947 to Harold and Betty Halverson (Allen). He graduated Marshalltown HS in 1965, then enlisted in the US Army. While in Viet Nam, David was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and received two Purple Hearts.

David married his lifelong partner Shirley Hults in the summer of 1972. They bought a 5 acre plot of land east of Marshalltown, built their forever home and raised their four children.

David worked at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown for 41 years, retiring in 2006. He loved building things in his wood shop and landscaping the property. He led his family by demonstrating his willingness to work hard to achieve their goals. He taught his children the value of a dollar and how to reap what you sow. They raised their own animals and maintained a garden every year, which produced much of what the family needed for food. They chopped and split wood to supply heat in the winter months. Never wanting to put his family in debt, he purchased the building supplies for the house as money was saved.

David is preceded in death by his loving parents Harold (Pat) and Betty Halverson and brother Larry.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years Shirley, his children Terrie (Gary) Hoelting, Steven (Laura) Halverson, Michael (Jennifer) Lada, Nichole Burrell (Fiancé Willie Guy). Grandchildren Shanna (Damien) Draper, Magen Lada, Alisha Halverson, Eric Lada, Delaina (Romello) Olds, Sabrina Hoelting, Eric (Katerra) Lada, Zachary Halverson, Dimia Burrell, Taylor and Allison Tremaine.
