Lloyd Eugene (L.E.) Schnitzer, age 76, passed away at his home in Tucson, AZ, on February 4, 2021.
L.E. was born on November 16, 1944, in Cherokee, OK. He graduated from College High School in Bartlesville, OK, in 1963. He attended Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
His career endeavors included work at Winnipeg General Hospital, OU Medical Center, Beth Israel Hospital, and MIT. He was an instructor at the University of Colorado Medical Center and manager at Unirad Corporation in Denver prior to moving to Marshalltown in 1974, where he became the director of the newly-established Department of Ultrasound at MMSC. He spent 28 years at MMSC prior to moving to Arizona in 2002. He worked at Banner Del Webb Hospital until his retirement in late 2012.
During his extensive career, he was affiliated with the AIUM (American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine), from which he received the Pioneer Award in 1988. He was co-founder of the SDMS (Society for Diagnostic Medical Sonography – originally ASUTS) in 1969. He served as president-elect of the SDMS from 1970-1972 and as chairman of the ARDMS from 1979-1981. He was one of the few sonographers registered in seven separate registries, which he achieved in 1975. In 1976, he co-founded the Iowa Society of Ultrasound. He was the first sonographer to ever record a fetal heart on film. Throughout his career, he traveled throughout the United States and Europe, presenting his research papers and lectures on the latest ultrasound advances.
Following his move to Marshalltown, he met Amy Brandt (Moeller) at MMSC, whom he later married in 1978. Together they had two children, Brianne and Guy.
L.E. enjoyed team roping with his trusty horse, Worry. He was a member of Elmwood Country Club and enjoyed many afternoons on the golf course, playing with The Bandits. L.E. was a licensed pilot and logged hundreds of flight hours. He enjoyed watching hockey and was a Phoenix Coyotes season ticket holder for several years. He loved his grandchildren and grand-puppies and spent as much time with them as possible.
L.E. was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Maxine. He is survived by his children, daughter Brianne (Matt) Fink of Ankeny, IA, and their children Corinne, Chase, Caylee and Matthew, and son Guy (Theresa) Schnitzer of Marana, AZ, and their fur-babies, Dakota and Denali. He is also survived by his younger sister, Barbara Aderton, of Bartlesville, OK.
