Born on February 14, 1952 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dan was the son of Harvey and Marge (Heck) McNary. His early years were spent in Des Moines before his family moved to Marshalltown, where he attended school and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1970. Dan honorably served in the United States Army for three years during the Vietnam era.

Upon his return to Iowa, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Janice Detrick, on May 29, 1976 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Together they made their home in Marshalltown, where they raised their son, Brian. Hardworking and meticulous, Dan dedicated his career as a tech four for the Marshall County Engineer’s office. His most notable project came about with the installation of the bike trail running from Marshalltown to Melbourne. He also was actively involved for many years with the Boy Scouts of America: serving as a Cub Scout leader, Boy Scout leader and District Eagle Scout chairman, as well as earning Polar Bear awards and Wood Badge. He used the skills acquired in his career to assist in surveying and planting trees at the Marshalltown Soccer Complex and working with the Marshall County Conservation Board. Dan and Janice were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown before relocating to Urbandale to be closer to their son and grandson in retirement.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of nearly 45 years, Janice; his son, Brian (Marcie) McNary of Urbandale; grandson, Malachy McNary and one on the way, Keagan McNary; and his siblings: David McNary of Marshalltown, Paula (Dennis) McKenzie of Franklin, TN and Mary (Norman) Erlandson of Florence, TX. He is also survived by brothers-in-law: Marvin (Debra) Detrick of Marshalltown, Paul (Michelle) Detrick of Gilman and Tim Vaughn of Ankeny; sisters-in-law: Diana Slifer and Carol Huff of Marshalltown, Sandra (Charles) Caligiuri of Des Moines, Paulette Gretter and Sharon (Tim) Winkel of Ankeny and Elaine (Richard) Rund of Cheyenne, WY; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Marge; in-laws, Vernice and Frank Detrick and sisters-in-law: Helen McNary and Audrey Vaughn.
