Elizabeth “Betty” Spickert

Heaven lit up on July 19th, 2021 when the angels greeted Elizabeth “Betty” Spickert. This is the day the Lord placed the jewels into our mother’s crown.

She will be celebrated with a Catholic Mass at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 27th at St. Henry Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be Monday, July 26th from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a Rosary to follow. Memorials may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date. Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Freese was born on November 22nd, 1936 to John Clement and Mildred Anna (Lang) Freese in the home her father built.

Betty graduated from Van Cleve High in 1954, where she excelled in basketball. She made 48 points in one game, the highlight of her career. She has been an avid sports fan all her life, including many years of bowling on women’s leagues.

Betty belonged to Logan Go-Get-Its girls 4H club. Winning a blue ribbon for her baked custard of which she said she’d never eat again.

In 1963, she met the love of her life on a blind date. September 28th, 1963 she married Edward Joseph Spickert at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They made their home in Marshalltown together for 52 years until Ed’s passing in 2015. They had three children: Todd, Dena, & Jodie.

She was a loving caretaker to many throughout her life, including her parents, her husband, and her mother-in-law.

Betty worked for Dunham Bush and NW Bell as a telephone operator and was quite the saleswoman for multiple other companies. She worked for CIRSI and volunteered for the Iowa Veterans Home for 9 years.

Betty was a member of St. Henry Catholic Church, Council of Women, Modern Woodman, Al-Alon and SOSS-Study of Sunday Scripture.

Left to cherish her beautiful memory are her children: Todd (Ramona) Spickert, Dena (Thomas) Triplett and Jodie (David) Higgason and her grandchildren: Chaz, Alexa, Ashley, Sierra, Spencer, Emily, Emma and Sawyer.

In death, Betty is reunited with her husband, Ed; her parents: Clem & Mildred; her siblings: Bernard and Glenn; her mother-in-law, Gertrude Anderly and her fathers-in-law, as well as other family members.
