David Wayne Myers, 67

David Wayne Myers, 67, died Monday, December 6, 2021, at the Largo Medical Center in Largo, FL, from stage 4 renal cell carcinoma complicated by pneumonia, with his wife and 3 children at his side. It was the end of his final yearly vacation with his kids, grandkids and extended family at the Great Heron Inn.

He was born August 20, 1954, in Eldora, Iowa, to Donald and Alberta (Mathews) Myers. Their family moved to Marshalltown when he was in the 6th grade. He was a proud member of the MHS Class of 1972. Dave’s “Al Bundy-esque” prowess on Cole Field for the Marshalltown Bobcats was legendary amongst his family. He attended Marshalltown Community College on scholarship playing Tiger football. A knee injury put him out of the football game and college, freeing him up to be recruited by Fisher Controls where he worked for forty-two blissful years until retiring in 2015 with two bad knees.

Dave was never a quitter and while still gainfully employed, he went back to college and graduated with an AA walking at the ceremony alongside his daughter. He continued to let Fisher Controls pay for his education and earned his BA, graduating summa cum laude from Buena Vista University.

David leaves us with memories of: epic family tours of the great American west; remodeling and building; remodeling and building; remodeling and building; fellowship with his family and friends, especially over the holidays; his undying love and devotion for his mother, father and siblings, in that order; attending the Cyclone football games or at home watching all varieties of sports; sharing his wide range of emotions that could all be experienced in a span of seconds; playing cards; sharing an occasional beer, all while listening to classic country or the oldies.

Dave was a man of many contradictions, he loved to spoil his children and grandchildren, while simultaneously being Depression Era style thrifty. He was both a loyal employee who never missed a day of work and a devoted family man, never missing a family event, vacation or child’s game. He was never shy about offering an unnecessary critique as to how a particular task should be accomplished but also couldn’t be prouder of his children or grandchildren. He was not shy about expressing his anger with a competing motorist, but always greeted his friends and family with a wise crack sense of humor and big, wide loving smile.

David is survived by his wife of forty-seven years and high school sweetheart Susan (Bru) Myers; son, Wesley, of Omaha, NE, (wife April, children Emeline and Laurel); daughter, Allison (his favorite nurse), of Iowa City, IA, (husband Scott Hanson, children Liam, Declan and Graham), and son Cameron, of Minneapolis, MN, (wife Alexandra). He is also survived by his mother, Alberta Myers, of Marshalltown, brothers: Donald Myers Jr., of Sandpoint, ID, Michael Myers, of Rathdrum, ID and William Myers, of Marshalltown; sisters: Rebecca Metz, of Marshalltown and Dixie Stipanovich, of Cedar Rapids, IA. Family was of the utmost importance to David and his love and support spread to all his wonderful nieces and nephews.

We are confident that David was greeted in Heaven by Jesus and his father, Donald Myers.
