Susanne was born on October 10, 1945, to Oscar and Iris (Swenson) Sather in Albert Lea, Minnesota, one of twelve children. She graduated from Waseca High School in 1963. Susanne married Jeffrey Hemphill on February 24, 1984, in Marshalltown, Iowa where she worked at Fisher Controls in customer service management. Jeff and Susanne lived in Texas from 1992 to 2001, England from 2001 to 2003, Ankeny from 2003 to 2012, and settled in Ames in 2012. She was deeply involved in her church, “Ascension Lutheran Church” in Ames.

Susanne was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and four brothers. She is survived by her husband, Jeffrey Hemphill; her sons, William (Amy) Hartman and Timothy Hartman; four brothers; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 A.M. at Ascension Lutheran Church in Ames, Iowa.
