The Bobcat girls golf squad battled the weather conditions and five other teams to take the Southeast Polk Invitational at Toad Valley Golf Course with Whitney Schrader and Kara Mattox leading the ‘Cats with a score of 40 and 41, respectively for nine holes.

The MHS men’s golf team nailed their first home meet as they defeated Southeast Polk 157-169 with Ken Koehler taking the medalist honors shooting a 38 followed by James Burger and Barry Spencer at 39 each.

MHS musicians Jeff Gazaway, conga drums; Larry Utter, drums; Sharon Sweeney, bass guitar and Bruce Randall, electric guitar, practiced many hours in preparation of the third annual Jazz Coffee Concert.

Jeff Peterson, son of Don and Josette Peterson, was named a National Merit Scholarship winner and received a $2,000 scholarship to the college of his choice.

For the second year in a row, the LDF-SEMCO boys and girls track teams took the Ta-Ma-Ja Conference titles with both teams first place finishes in seven events and Karen Mohr the only double winner with firsts in the 440 dash and 220 dash.

It took four extra holes of golf, but Jeff Allen, of LDF-SEMCO, captured the medalist honors at the Big Iowa Conference golf meet shooting a 76 to nip John Jordan, of Parkersburg.

The MHS boys tennis squad smashed Newton 8-1 with singles victories by Rick Cathcart, Scott Ailts, Ted Williams, Bruce Graether, Paul Kozieradski and Jim Lankelma.

The winners of the Marshalltown Tuesday Musical Club Summer Camp Scholarship auditions were: Emily Larkin, Alyssa McMahon, Melanie Mulder, Monica Mulder, Ryan Baker and Kristin Conrad.

The LDF-SEMCO boys and girls track squads used some strong relay teams to catapult them into first place at the Big Iowa Conference meet as the girls 4×800 relay of: Erica Stonewall, Angela McKenna, Kristy Devlin and Holli Fowler and the distance medley team of: Jessica Ridout, Jodi Eggelston, Heather Ames and Teri Cooling all crossed the finish line in first place. Cooling and Fowler both had individual firsts in the open 800 and the 1500 run.

The Colo-NESCO boys soccer team remained undefeated in league play as they won 2-1 over Gilbert with Dane Kaufman making the first half goal assisted by Curtis Deaton and Andy Becker knocking in the winning goal with Chad Reifschneider assisting.

Kelly Johnston, Matthew Johnston, Priya Johnston and Lauren Johnston, on a family canoe trip down Linn Creek, discovered a large bone verified by Grinnell College as a 10,000-100,000 year old mastodon bone which was turned over to ISU for further examination.

The BCL girls track team streaked away from the pack to capture the Comette crown with Lori Adams and Gae Dielschneider striking gold twice: Adams in the softball throw, shattering the old record by 16 feet and the discus and Dielschneider setting a record in the 440 dash and winning the 880 run.

The 5th-ranked Bobcats used patience and composure to secure a 3-0 second half victory over Fort Dodge as Nathan Minkel finally broke the game open with the first goal followed by Tyler Fulton and Minkel putting the finishing touches on with a penalty kick goal.

The Bobcat girls track team dominated the triangular with Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Washington winning 12-out-of-19 events. Jenny Ray won the 100 and 200 meter; Jill Terrillion the 800; Michelle Duder the 400; Tina Blum the 3000 meter run; Stacie Henze the 400 low hurdles; Alesha Padget the discus and all but one of the relays.

The MHS boys golf squad notched its first victory of the season in a sudden death playoff against Knoxville as Ken Knoll led the ‘Cats with a 36 and captured medalist honors.
