2022 construction update

T-R PHOTO BY STEPHANIE BOWERS Construction work continues on the 18th Ave. bridge in Marshalltown. Completion is expected by Oct. 15.
We are halfway through the 2022 construction season, and thank you for your patience so far in navigating street closures, lane closures, and more. Some projects are getting close to wrapping up, and some are just about to begin. Here is the latest information on some of the bigger construction projects happening around Marshalltown.
• The Fourth Street and Meadow Lane Storm Sewer Project will keep this intersection closed for approximately another four weeks, with the intersection being opened to local traffic only initially. This project also includes asphalt work on Edgeland Street, South Fourth Street, and Meadow Lane that will follow.
• A new sidewalk is being added along East South Street from South Seventh Avenue to South 12th Avenue, which is actively happening right now. This project is supposed to be substantially complete in early September. This project is to create a sidewalk to connect to Anson Elementary.
• All the sidewalks are poured around Fisher Elementary School, and they will be ready to go for the start of the school year.
• Work is underway on the Edgewood Street Extension, which will be a multi-year project. This project is creating new utilities and a new street to connect Edgewood Street to a new portion of North Eighth Avenue north of Marion Street. Water main work is happening on Marion Street, which is causing some lane closures. Paving is expected in 2023, with substantial completion in September 2023.
• Bridge work continues on the 18th Avenue Viaduct to replace the approach slabs. This work will continue to cause some lane closures, with substantial completion expected by Oct. 15.
• Creekside Trail is a new street into a new subdivision on Sixth Street that many people have been asking questions about. Utilities are being installed in preparation for the actual street to be constructed in the coming months. If all goes as planned, this street should be ready to go in October for the construction of new homes.
• There will be lots of work happening around town beginning this month as part of a Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Project, which is expected to last more than a year. This project will focus on lining of sanitary sewer lines, mostly on the north side of Marshalltown. This will result in sporadic street reductions or intersection closures, but nothing that will last for a long period of time.
• Elks Park improvements are also underway. Grading is being done to provide for a more accessible space with new sidewalks, a new shelter, a new playground and more. This project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Marshalltown Water Works has a few projects under construction now, including water main replacements along Fifth and Sixth Avenues, and a new project with a closure on South Street for a water main replacement from Center Street to Sixth Street.
And we are not taking any breaks in 2023. The State Street Reconstruction Project should start as soon as the ground thaws in March 2023 and is scheduled for two construction seasons. The Center Street viaduct work will go out to bid in late 2022 or early 2023 for repairs to be made in 2023. East Main Street is in design for reconstruction from 5th Avenue to 12th Avenue.
