Protecting students’ futures: A plea to preserve Iowa AEAs

I have a son who is on the autism spectrum. When Elias was little, words didn’t come easy, and bad behaviors spoke louder. At the age of three, a diagnosis in Iowa City set us on a path that would change our lives. A speech-language pathologist entered Elias’s world, evaluating and opening the door to a journey with our local Area Education Agency (AEA).

The AEA provided tools and supports that became Elias’s voice. For seven years, the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) was not just a professional from the AEA but a cherished part of Elias’s and our lives. High school brought a godsend — the AEA experience program. It wasn’t just about jobs; it was about discovering potential. Elias tried different roles, learned new skills and even had a real job in high school.

His future took shape. Through the SAVE program, Elias went to college, gained independence and pursued a welding program. Today, eight years into his career, he’s a certified welder — one of the best — at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

Reflecting on my son’s journey, I am absolutely certain that without these programs, therapists and services, Elias would not be where he is today. The worry I have now is for other students, who are like my Elias. If the proposed legislation to dismantle the services of the AEAs moves forward, the very opportunities that allowed Elias to learn, grow and contribute to society, ultimately leading to a better quality of life, will not be available for other kids. Let’s not let that happen.

I am asking you to support Iowa’s AEAs and stand up for all the Iowans that you serve, including educators and those with disabilities.
