Reflections on 2024
This is the time of year to reflect on the past 12 months and look forward to good things to come in the next year. In my short time in Marshalltown, I have been encouraged by all the positive things happening both in the City organization and in the community. The City completed the State Street reconstruction project this fall, which is a key project in the implementation of the Downtown Master Plan. The State Street project added a cycle track to better facilitate active transportation as well as a number of safety elements and streetscape amenities. The design for the first phase of Main Street reconstruction is nearly complete and construction will begin in the spring. This project has some amazing elements, including an event space so that we can celebrate in our downtown area.
The Linn Creek District Projects (the Apgar Water Plaza, Ann C. Keyser Trailhead, Emerson Bridge, and the Martha-Ellen Tye Playhouse) are underway with design and construction bid letting complete. These projects are components in the Linn Creek Master Plan and have creative placemaking elements that add vibrancy to Marshalltown as well as space for the community to gather and celebrate. The Linn Creek projects are truly a collaborative effort with financial support from the State Iowa, the City of Marshalltown, local non-profit organizations, local industry, and numerous private donors. It is collaborative efforts like this that inspire a community.
Phase I of the Riverview Park Improvements started construction in the fall of 2024 and will continue in Spring 2025. This project is part of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and includes the construction of four pickleball courts, a turfed volleyball/foot volleyball court, and lighting for those and the current basketball court. The project will also make some improvements to the lagoon and put a new bridge over it replacing the old one. Some amazing amenities to look forward to enjoying in beautiful Riverview Park!
There have been a lot of changes within the City organization over the last few months. The City appointed a new City Administrator, Police Chief, Fire Chief, Community Development Director and Assistant Director, and appointment of a Parks and Recreation Director is pending. This is a time to embrace change and new ideas while honoring the contribution of previous directors. We stand on their shoulders as we move the city forward in 2025.
In reflection I am the most thankful for the opportunity to serve here in Marshalltown. The City Council cares deeply about the community and their constituents and has a vision for good things to come. 2025 is the year where we continue to build out key strategic and master plans while maintaining high quality services for all community members.
