Year of record collections for Marshall County Treasurer

Last month we closed the books on fiscal year 2020-21 in Marshall County. While it was an abnormal year with the COVID-19 pandemic, tax collections matched our normal rising trends and vehicle fees collected exceeded expectations. A matter of fact, the Marshall County Treasurer’s Office had a record year of collections totaling $84.5 million. Here are the highlights of dollars collected:

• Property taxes: $64.2 million

• Motor vehicle fees $14.6 million

• Property tax credits from the state of Iowa: $5.25 million

• City special assessments: $85,430

• Mobile home taxes $60,124

The Treasurer’s Office job doesn’t end with just depositing the collections in the county bank account. Each month’s collections are disbursed to the appropriate entities. The property taxes, mobile home taxes and special assessments are disbursed to cities, schools, the county, community colleges, townships, county assessor and ag Extension. And $14.2 million of the motor vehicle fees was disbursed to the Iowa DOT and the road use tax fund. This past year Marshall County retained $398,000 of the motor vehicle fees for the processing of 16,487 vehicle titles and 46,400 vehicle registration renewals across Marshall County. This is a major source of revenue for the Treasurer’s Office to operate and cover payroll and office supplies.

My staff and I fully recognize the people of Marshall County are not necessarily the most excited to pay taxes and vehicle fees. We are blessed to have our jobs to be entrusted with your public tax dollars we collect each day. We are your liaison between you and the Iowa Code and Iowa Departments of Revenue and Transportation. We ultimately strive to provide service with a smile, and that you walk away from our office with a good experience and embolden your trust in local government.
