Teachers are superheroes

Having just observed “Teacher Appreciation Day,” I want to thank all who have chosen the profession of teaching. They are superheroes – teaching our children reading, math, and social studies, hugging crying little ones, wiping runny noses, writing curriculum, posting grades, dealing with worried or angry parents and on and on.

If only our legislators showed appreciation for what they do. Public schools deliver productive citizens who contribute to our economy. Public schools deliver leaders who build community. When money is funneled away from public schools, we all lose. According to an article in the New York Times, schools that are adequately funded serve all students better, and low income students and disadvantaged children benefit the most.

Isn’t that what we want? Public tax dollars should stay with public institutions. Remember that one special public school teacher who influenced your life the next time you vote.
