The hysterical letter by DC Larson in the Times Republican reveals why we have to fear the walking stupid on mental health care. The walking stupid are voting against state and federal programs for the mentally ill to finance a truly cruel and greedy Big Beautiful Bill.

Larson blames the Democrats for letting a deranged man in Charlotte, North Carolina stab a woman to death on the Charlotte transit system. Larson twists the words of Mayor Vi Lyles calling for more compassion for the mentally ill as a heartless woke support for the deranged man. No, that was not what he meant.

The Republicans since President Ronald Reagan have supported the slashing of federal grants for mental health programs which forced the closure of mental health hospitals across America and the dumping of their patients onto the streets.

If political blame can be assigned, it is the Republican legislators, not the Democrats, who created the homeless mentally ill. Yes, many of the homeless are mentally ill and dangerous but they are not responsible human beings. If they murder our neighbors and families, we are responsible because we put them on the streets instead of in institutions that can contain and restrain them. That was the message of Mayor Lyles.

Larson et al, wake up from your cynical “wokeness.” You are part of the problem not the solution. Are we going to shoot insane people in the streets like the walking dead and think that is the solution? If they are tried in court, judges will rule they are not guilty because they are not mentally competent.

There will always be mentally ill people but true Christianity finds ways and means to humanely treat these people away from society.
