Supporting Melisa Fonseca for city council

I wholeheartedly support Melisa Fonseca in her bid for City Council. I was so encouraged when I heard Melisa was planning on running, as Melisa and her family are some of the most civic-minded people I know. This means not just focusing on or talking about the challenges we face, but being willing to put in the work toward making a difference in a positive way. And while it is not the only factor, representation matters. Melisa has excellent skills, communication style, a good knowledge base and great aptitude for learning — but she also has a diverse perspective: as a woman, a ...

Where has justice been given to the Palestinians so they could become a nation?

Democracy leads to dictatorship

Historian Alexander Tyler explained two centuries ago the lesson from Greece’s experiment with direct control of government by the people. “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can exist until a majority of the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” The average life of the world’s greatest ...
