SPORTS SHORTS: ISU’s Ryen earns Big 12 weekly award

IRVING, Texas — The Big 12 Conference announced Monday that Iowa State senior Trever Ryen was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

Ryen, a native of Ida Grove, made his mark on special teams in a number of areas in Iowa State’s 45-0 win over Kansas on Saturday. He had four punt returns for 86 yards, including a 68-yard return for a touchdown to give the Cyclones a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

That was Ryen’s second career punt return for a touchdown, tying for second in ISU history. He also recovered his first fumble on the punt team.

Bobcat JV football downed by Rams

The Marshalltown junior varsity football team fell at home Monday night to Southeast Polk, 34-20, at Leonard Cole Field.

The Bobcats got a pair of touchdown runs from Kabba Pins, and Jacob Smith converted the other score for MHS.

Defensively, Marshalltown was led by Trey Sinn, who pulled down his second interception in as many games, and Noah Albee, who had a takeaway to help the Bobcats make a goal-line stand against the visiting Rams.
