SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs rout Union in regular-season finale
LA PORTE CITY — The East Marshall softball team closed its regular season in style with a 16-0, four-inning victory over Union Community (2-22) on Tuesday night.
The makeup game from June 23 saw the visiting Mustangs (24-9) score at least once in all four of their at-bats, including a five-run top of the first inning.
Junior pitcher Peyton Grabenbauer allowed just one hit and one hit batter in the shutout, striking out seven for the win. Avery Weber hit a one-out double in the first, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck senior Mallory Wrage was plunked in the fourth.
Ashtyn Wheater went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs to lead the East Marshall offense. Grabenbauer was 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and her courtesy runner Amiya Kluck scored three times. Gianna Boswell was 2-for-3 with two runs, while Makayla Hala hit a double and drove in three runs.
East Marshall hosts Panorama (9-21) in tonight’s Class 2A Region 4 quarterfinals.
PCM shuts out East Marshall in district opener
DES MOINES — PCM’s Kaleb DeVries came within one out of a one-hit shutout to lead the Mustangs past East Marshall in Monday’s Class 2A District 11 first-round baseball game at James W. Cownie Baseball Park.
Jaxson Boswell had East Marshall’s only hit in the season-ending defeat. The Mustangs (11-14) worked four walks but struck out 14 times against DeVries. Shay Burns got the final out for PCM (9-13) after DeVries hit his pitch count limit.
Joryn Shively took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits and three total walks over two innings. Nathan Frye pitched four innings of one-run ball in relief, striking out five and walking two.
