MHS boys tennis sweeps Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown boys tennis team earned its first CIML Iowa Conference victory of the season on Thursday when it swept Fort Dodge on the road, 11-0.

It all started strong in the singles matches with the Bobcats (2-1, 1-0) going 6-0 against the Dodgers (0-1, 0-1). Luke McKibben won his No. 1 singles match against Justin Vaughan in straight sets (6-4, 6-2), Luke Smith beat Chris Hatton in their No. 2 singles match in straight sets (6-1, 6-4), and Jack Gruening handled Brayden Bell at No. 3 singles in straight sets (6-0, 6-1).

Aside from the top three, Jacob Smith, Joe Kennedy and Kadin Skala all took down their singles opponents, with Kennedy having the toughest match winning against Antavion Adams in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.

In the doubles matches, McKibben and Luke Smith continued to play well together by dismantling Vaughan and Hatton in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, and Gruening and Jacob Smith also handled the pair of Bell and Adams in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

The lone full sweep of the day came in the No. 4 doubles match, as Skala and Reed Fricke beat Zach Schwering and Gage Riley 6-0, 6-0.

Marshalltown turns around and hosts Newton today for its home opener starting at 4 p.m., weather permitting.
