MHS girls steal a pair at Dowling

WEST DES MOINES — The Bobcats didn’t go down emptyhanded.

Dowling Catholic, the defending Class 2A girls’ state tennis runner-up, surrendered a pair of doubles matches to Marshalltown on Tuesday, defeating the Bobcats 9-2 in a CIML Iowa Conference dual.

The Maroons (8-2, 4-1) put the victory away with a 6-0 sweep of singles competition before Marshalltown (3-5, 2-2) made off with two of the five doubles bouts.

The Bobcats’ No. 3 pairing of Sarah Jacobs and Acacia Brown tallied their team’s only straight-set victory of the night, winning 6-1, 7-5 over Shannon Dougherty and Claire Triplett. Marshalltown’s No. 5 pairing of Madi Finch and Julieta Cano needed a third-set tiebreaker to beat Camille Weiss and Ellie Doud in thrilling fashion, 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (5-7), (10-4).

None of Dowling’s nine match victories needed more than two sets. The best contest came at No. 6 singles as Dougherty fought to finish off Marshalltown’s Olivia Ryan in a second-set tiebreaker, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Aubrey Hala and Libby Loney won seven games but couldn’t manage to steal a set from Dowling’s Erin Mullin and Frannie Brown at No. 4 doubles, falling 7-5, 6-2.

The Bobcats go back out on the road Thursday for a cross-CIML dual at Des Moines Lincoln before hosting Iowa Conference frontrunner Urbandale.
