MCC volleyball starts with a win

SANFORD, N.C. — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team won its first match of the year on Wednesday with a straight-set victory over Central Carolina Community College, 25-7, 25-10, 25-7.

Marija Eqic led the way offensively for the Tigers (1-0) with 10 kills, while Jelena Dukic finished with 23 assists. Elena Yee was just behind Eqic with nine kills, followed by Chiara Mottola with six.

Halee Pedro was the top MCC defender with nine digs, while South Tama County graduate Sadie Smith had a solo block and a block assist in her first college game.

Smith also had two kills and two digs in the win.

Even though his girls pulled out the victory rather easily, Tiger head coach Justin Hoskins said there’s still a long way to go before he will be satisfied with the team’s play.

“We played really good volleyball at times tonight,” he said. “We also played really sloppy volleyball at times. Hopefully we got some nerves and mental mistakes out tonight so that we can build on the good things we did as we continue our road trip.”

MCC next heads to Allendale, S.C., today for the second game of its season-opening road trip against the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie, starting at 6 p.m.
