SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans win own cross country invite
GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys cross country team won its home invitational at Town and Country Golf Club on Thursday with a score of 71.
Paul Brockett was the highest placer for the Spartans by coming in sixth with a time of 18 minutes, 16 seconds, while Derek Ciddio came in just behind in seventh with an 18:17 and Kenny Day took ninth with an 18:30.
BCLUW senior Caleb Silver won the race individually with a time of 17:27, and the Comets took third as a team with a score of 78. Ruben Montoya and Neifer Ralston both were top-10 placers as well, coming in eighth and 10th respectively.
East Marshall finished fifth on the team score, coming in with a 142. Cam Hungerford placed fifth with a time of 18:11, and Cade Curphy took 18th with a 19:09.
GMG’s Jackson Edens paced the Wolverines to a seventh-place team finish by placing third individually with a time of 17:55, and North Tama didn’t have a team score but Sam Snyder led the Redhawks by finishing in 30th at a 19:57.
Mustang girls lead locals at GC/G-R
GRUNDY CENTER — The East Marshall girls cross country team was the highest local finisher in the Spartan Invitational at Town and Country Golf Club by taking fifth with a score of 110.
Wendy Liera paced the Mustangs by placing eighth individually at a time of 22 minutes, 16 seconds, and Mkenzie Robinson came in 14th with a 23:19.
The host Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls finished in sixth on the team scores with a 145. Taylor Stahl was the highest Spartan finisher, taking seventh at a 22:02, while Cora Saak came in 13th with a 23:18 and Lily Ehlers placed 26th with a 24:08.
GMG came in eighth as a team with a score of 217, with Angel Schewe leading the way by taking 16th individually with a time of 23:25. Belle Duncan also took 39th for the Wolverines at a 25:19, followed by Zoe Duncan in 42nd with a 25:30.
BCLUW finished 10th as a team with a 245. Katie Thompson was the highest Comet placer, coming in 12th with a time of 24:32.
North Tama didn’t have enough runners for a team score, but Jordan Rigel was the top Redhawk finisher in 67th with a 29:12.
