SPORTS SHORTS: GMG goes 1-1 at Iowa Star Tourney

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The GMG volleyball team finished 1-1 in the silver bracket of the Iowa Star Conference Tournament on Saturday.

The Wolverines (7-17) lost to Riceville in straight sets, 21-17, 21-19, to start the day, but they beat Valley Lutheran in straight sets, 21-7, 21-10, to wrap the tournament and the regular season with a win.

Mable Dieleman led GMG in kills with six in the tournament, followed by Tory Novotny and Emily Vaughn with three and Kelsey Vaverka and Maesa Groth with two.

Novotny had a good day serving with seven aces, all against the Crusaders. Madi Krull had four aces, three against Valley Lutheran, and she finished with a team-high 16 assists.

Vaverka led the Warriors in digs with eight, followed by Dieleman with six and Novotny with four.

No. 4 Redhawks rough up Postville

TRAER — The Class A No. 4 North Tama football team earned its second-straight shutout win with a blanking of Postville on Friday night, 53-0.

Coupled with a 49-0 win over GMG two weeks ago, the Redhawks (7-1) have outscored their last two opponents 102-0.

Tyler Morrison had a field day running the ball, going for 180 yards and four touchdowns including an 88-yard score to start the game.

Skyler Staker and Hale Hulme weren’t asked to throw the ball much, but Staker did hit Cael Even for a 66-yard score in the second quarter to give North Tama a 27-point lead against the Pirates (1-7).

The Redhawk defense really got after Postville, holding them to just 11 total yards and minus-29 rushing yards. Staker had four total tackles for loss and a sack and while Cory Isenhower and Ryan Mclean both had four tackles for loss.

North Tama finishes its regular season on Friday with a road game against BCLUW in Conrad.

Mustang football falls at North Linn

TROY MILLS — The East Marshall football team lost a Class 1A District 6 game to North Linn on Friday, 26-6.

Noah Bandstra had the lone touchdown for the Mustangs (0-8, 0-4) with a 29-yard run in the second quarter. Bandstra finished with 136 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Cole Nauman was 10-for-19 passing with 88 yards and two interceptions. Eric Ommen caught six of Nauman’s passes for 56 yards for the team lead.

Bandstra also had 14.5 tackles to lead East Marshall defensively, and Ryley Overton followed with seven tackles against the Lynx (5-3, 2-2).

The Mustangs finish the season on Friday at home against Jesup.
