’Cats get 3 on all-district 1st team

Three members of the Marshalltown football team have been selected as first-team all-Class 4A District 2 honorees.

Seniors Derrick Garth and Keaton Baccam and junior Justice Richardson all received their first all-district honors by making the first team after the Bobcats finished 4-5 this season, their best record since 2012.

Garth was fifth in the district in rushing touchdowns with 10 this year, and he had 614 rushing yards to finish eighth in the district. Garth also had two receiving touchdowns and he had two 2-point conversions, giving him 76 total points on the year to finish fourth among district players.

Garth also contributed on the defensive side of the ball with 24.5 total tackles, placing fourth on the team, and two solo sacks, which was tied for eighth in the district.

Baccam was a solid force on the offensive line all season, part of why the Marshalltown finished with 1,936 yards on the ground to place third in the district and 15th in 4A.

Richardson led the district in fumbles recovered with four and he had two interceptions, which gave him the most total takeaways. In fact, Richardson tied for the lead in 4A with his four fumbles recovered. He was also the team leader in tackles with 45, 31 of which were solo takedowns.

Three more Bobcats were selected to the second team, with seniors Giorgio DiIorio and Jonathan Hernandez and junior Carson Beals all making the list.

DiIorio was the team’s leading rusher with 688 yards, while Hernandez had the fourth-longest rushing touchdown of the season in 4A District 2 with a 73-yard scamper. Beals tied with Richardson for the team-lead in interceptions with four, and he was 15th in the district in tackles for loss with five.

The six players on the first and second teams doubled the three from the 2017 season and are the most for the Bobcats since 2016.

Five MHS players were given all-district honorable mentions as well with seniors Dylan Eygabroad, Kyle Griego, Jaocb Smith, Bennett O’Hare and Francisco Ordaz all earning the honor.
