PREP WRESTLING: Mustangs advance 2, STC moves 1 through districts

KNOXVILLE — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team earned two state qualifiers at the Class 2A District 6 meet on Saturday.

Cole Nauman at 152 pounds and Noah Bandstra at 195 both won their brackets to return the Mustangs to the state meet after not having a qualifier a year ago.

Nauman (31-8) started the day with a win over Bryce Murray from Carlisle by a 3-1 decision in the first sudden victory period. He then beat Cody Wallace from PCM in the finals by a 6-4 decision.

Bandstra (37-2), ranked No. 2 at 195 by The Predicament, dominated his way into the state mix. Neither of his matches left the first period, as he pinned Reid Walters from Chariton 1 minute, 17 seconds, into their semifinal match, then he pinned Carlisle’s Gabe Hemsted in 50 seconds in the finals.

Carson Burchland (26-15) placed third at 138, losing in the second-place match to Eli Rose from Grinnell by a 6-4 decision, and Connor Murty (22-14) finished in fourth.

STC’s Schrock advances

KNOXVILLE — The South Tama County wrestling team sent one Trojan to the state meet from the Class 2A District 6 meet on Saturday.

Kalem Schrock (13-16) is heading to Wells Fargo Arena for the first time in his career after placing second at heavyweight. Schrock won his semifinal match against Jace Smith from PCM by disqualification, but he lost the first place match by injury default to Cole Cremeens from Williamsburg. Schrock then was pitted against Smith in the second-place match but moved on due to his win over Smith earlier in the day.

Aiden Waseskuk (32-15) placed third for STC at 182 after losing the second-place match to Ethan Reed from Carlisle by a first-period pin. Logan Arp finished in fourth for the Trojans at 120.

No Redhawks advance

DENVER — The North Tama wrestling team had two representatives at the Class 1A District 1 meet on Saturday but was not able to advance a Redhawk to the state meet.

Chase Morrison finished in third at 195 pounds, while Tyler Morrison came in fourth at 182.

Chase (21-7) lost in the semifinals to Treyen Steffen from Sumner-Fredericksburg, ranked No. 10 in Class 1A at 195 by The Predicament, by a 6-2 decision, but he beat C.J. Niedert from North Butler-Clarksville in the third-place match by a 9-4 decision. Chase was not awarded a wrestleback.

Tyler (10-6) lost to No. 4 Nathan Johanningmeier from MFL MarMac by a first-period pin, then he lost to Evan Kalainoff from Nashua-Plainfield, 12-5.

Storm denied state meet

INDEPENDENCE — The South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling team had three athletes make the finals at the Class 2A District 5 meet but none of those wrestlers were able to make it to the state tournament.

Carter Kolthoff at 106 pounds, Taylor Kolthoff at 120 and Coby Willett at 132 all placed third for the Storm, while Owen Fuller finished in fourth.

Taylor (36-5) won his first match by an 11-2 major decision over Levi Lauer from North Fayette Valley, but he fell to Kaden Anderlik from Crestwood, ranked No. 4 in Class 2A at 120 by The Predicament, by a 15-2 major decision in the finals. In the second-place match, Taylor lost to Hunter Worthen from Union by an 11-10 decision to keep him from making a second-straight trip to state.

Willett (33-11) also won his first match, beating Brayden Anderson from NH/TV by a 9-2 decision. He lost in the finals to No. 7 Jackson Rolfs from Decorah by an 11-2 major decision, then he fell to Stone Schmitz from Union by a second-period pin in the second-place match.

Carter (33-9) lost his first match to No. 3 Carter Fousek from Crestwood by a 9-0 major decision, but he beat Austin Wilkins from Decorah in the third-place match by a 6-3 decision. Carter then lost to No. 10 Lincoln Mehlert from Union, 8-5, for second place.

Trojans go without

ADEL — The West Marshall wrestling team had two grapplers make the Class 2A District 1 meet, but neither were able to advance to the state meet.

Jacob Vawter (25-16) placed fourth at 120 pounds after losing to No. 10 Colby Wiederholt from Van Meter-Earlham and then Ryan Davidson from North Polk.

Cael Kline (20-12) also placed fourth at 170. Kline fell to Jim Chism from Ballard, 6-0, and was pinned by Sam Miller from Van Meter-Earlham.
