SPORTS SHORTS: Pep rally for state-bound MHS bowlers

The Marshalltown High School boys bowling team will hold a pep rally and state tournament send-off on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Wayward Social.

The Bobcats are headed to the Class 3A state tournament for the fifth year in a row. The tournament will be held at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Kickbush nets Wartburg record nine 3s

WAVERLY — Wartburg College senior guard Camden Kickbush scored a career-high 33 points while breaking the Knights’ single-game record for 3-pointers in the team’s 103-81 victory over Buena Vista on Wednesday night.

Kickbush, a 2015 Gladbrook-Reinbeck graduate, shot 12-for-18 from the field, which included a 9-for-13 performance from 3-point range. He also had seven rebounds and five assists in the American Rivers Conference win.

Kickbush is currently averaging 17.1 points per game and is 90-for-199 from 3-point distance (45.2 percent) this year. Earlier this season he became the school’s all-time 3-point leader and surpassed 1,000 points for his career.

Fricke eclipses 1,000 points at Waldorf

FOREST CITY — Waldorf University senior Taylor Fricke scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Warriors past Dakota State for an 84-70 win on Jan. 26, eclipsing the 1,000-point plateau for her career.

The 2015 East Marshall graduate from Gilman is the second-leading scorer for Waldorf this season, averaging 13.3 points per game, and the third-leading rebounder with 5.1 boards per contest. In her 26-point performance, Fricke shot 9-for-15 from the field, including 3-for-5 from 3-point land, and was 5-of-7 at the free-throw line.

Fricke and the Warriors are enjoying their best season under fifth-yead head coach Katie (Kitzman) Schutjer, a 2005 East Marshall graduate. Waldorf is 14-11 overall and 9-5 in the North Star Athletic Association heading into the postseason.
