Bobcat boys tennis sweeps aside Rails

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys tennis team picked up its fourth of the year on Tuesday with an 11-0 sweep of Des Moines Lincoln on the road.

In the singles matches for the Bobcats (4-2), Luke Smith took a 6-0, 6-2, win in the No. 1 spot, Jack Gruening was victorious at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1, Kevin Strand won 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3, Jacob Eberle was a 6-1, 6-2, winner at No. 4, Jacob Smith didn’t lose a game at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-0, showing and Ethan Benscoter won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

Luke Smith and Jacob Smith had a fight on their hands in the No. 1 doubles match but eventually won in straight-sets, 7-5, 7-5. The lower doubles matches were competitive too, with Carson Beals and John Loney winning at No. 4, 6-2, 5-7, (10-5), and Eli Thiessen and Nic Price winning at No. 5, 6-1, 5-7, (10-4), marking the first varsity win for Thiessen.

Eberle and David Brintnall made quick work at No. 3 doubles with a 6-0, 6-1, win and Strand and Gruening had a little more of a challenge but eventually also won in straight sets at No. 2, 6-4, 6-4.

Next up the MHS boys travel to Fort Dodge for a CIML Iowa Conference meeting on Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.
